Oct 30: Melissa Races Off and Hurricane Season Winds Down

It is pretty incredible that we first started talking about the potential for Melissa over two weeks ago in this blog post. Now, it is quickly headed to Bermuda and will then race out to the North Atlantic:

With a month left in the season, it becomes rare to get a storm but not unheard of. A recent example is Hurricane Nicole in November 2022 which made landfall on the east coast of Florida. The good news is there's not much of a signal for anything anytime soon outside of perhaps the far southwest Caribbean but it would be pretty difficult for anything to impact the US from that location:

The satellite image showing Melissa racing towards Bermuda with a moisture stream into New England is quite impressive this afternoon:

There's already been widespread rain across the Northeast and more heavy rain will work its way through New England tonight:

We've talked about the cool weather expected for Halloween and that is still very much on track with some lingering showers and gusty winds across the interior Northeast and some rain across the Pacific Northwest:

The next several days will be below average across much of the Eastern US but by the second week in November, temperature moderate and will be well above average. Of course by that time the average temperature is lower so we won't be expecting any widespread 90° days or anything like that:

In addition, the first full week of November looks relatively quiet with biggest rain chances and totals confined to the West Coast:
