Atlantic Hurricane Season Peaks With No Hurricanes in 2026

September 10 marks the climatological peak of the Atlantic hurricane season, but 2026 has yet to produce a hurricane. If the Atlantic remains hurricane-free through September 11, the season will set a new record for the latest first hurricane of the satellite era. The peak is based on the historical distribution of tropical cyclone activity, not a date when hurricane activity suddenly begins or ends.

How Many Storms Has the Atlantic Season Had so Far? 

There have been just five named storms across the Atlantic Basin this year and all five of them have been very short-lived. As we discussed would be likely in our 2026 Hurricane Season Outlook, three of the storms formed very close to land, giving communities little time to prepare for potential impacts. Fortunately, none of the storms had time to strengthen significantly before making landfall. 

Just because these storms were short-lived doesn't mean they didn't produce significant impacts. Tropical Storm Arthur actually produced a new Louisiana 24-hour rainfall record in Cottonport where 29.06" of rain fell. Tropical Storm Bertha was also a short storm but produced wind gusts over 50 mph along the Florida panhandle, leading to rough surf and some coastal flooding. Read the full report for Bertha here. 

Tropical Storms Cristobal and Dolly formed much further away from the United States. Cristobal didn't impact any land at all. Dolly weakened to an open tropical wave before moving into the Caribbean Sea and brought beneficial rain to the Caribbean islands. 

The last system, Tropical Storm Edouard, strengthened into a strong tropical storm before making landfall in Southwest Louisiana. A peak wind gust of 90 mph was observed in Port Arthur, TX and heavy rain fell across Eastern Texas. The peak rain total of 24.36" was near Thicket, TX.

Could We Break a Record for the Latest Hurricane? 

With no hurricane having formed yet this year, the Atlantic is approaching the record for the latest first hurricane of the satellite era. The average first Atlantic hurricane forms around August 11, so we are already nearly a month beyond that date.

The current record for the latest first hurricane is September 11. Both Hurricane Gustav in 2002 and Hurricane Humberto in 2013 reached hurricane strength on that date. If the Atlantic remains hurricane-free through September 11, the 2026 season will establish a new record.

The lack of hurricanes is particularly notable because we're not simply talking about a quiet start to the season. We're now entering the heart of the Atlantic hurricane season with no hurricanes at all.

The National Hurricane Center's climatology shows that hurricane activity typically increases rapidly through August before reaching its peak around September 10. By this point in an average season, several hurricanes have typically already formed.

Why Has the Atlantic Basin Been so Quiet? 

A strong El Niño has developed and is forecast to become even stronger as we head into the fall and winter months. Historically, El Niño tends to increase vertical wind shear across the Atlantic Basin, making it more difficult for tropical systems to develop and organize.

That increased wind shear has been one of the major factors limiting tropical development this season. Tropical Storm Dolly, for example, formed in the Main Development Region but quickly weakened to a tropical wave as it encountered strong wind shear across the Caribbean and western Atlantic.

Does a Quiet Start Mean a Quiet Finish? 

Just because we haven't had a hurricane across the Atlantic Basin doesn't mean we will go the entire season without one. The Atlantic hurricane season continues through November 30, and there have been plenty of notable storms that developed after the climatological peak.

The 2015 season is a good example. That year also featured a strong El Niño and produced Hurricane Joaquin in late September, which became a major hurricane, followed by Hurricane Kate in November.

In other words, a quiet start does not eliminate the possibility of a significant storm later in the season.

Is Anything Developing in the Atlantic? 

As of 8 am on September 10, there are no areas being monitored for development for the next seven days across the Atlantic Basin.

This is the second year in a row there isn't a single area being monitored by the NHC on September 10, the peak of the hurricane season. This year's lack of activity is especially unusual when compared with recent hurricane seasons. Every other year except 2026 and 2025 had multiple areas being monitored for tropical development.The extended forecast from the Climate Prediction Center also shows very low chances for tropical development through the end of the month for the Atlantic basin. 

Still, a quiet Atlantic today doesn't guarantee a quiet Atlantic later this fall. As we've seen so far this year, storms can develop quickly and close to home, giving communities less time to prepare. Continuing to monitor the forecast through the end of the season remains important.
