On the Radar with Jess
Our first system of the week brought widespread rain and storms to much of Texas today with scenes like these common across the region:
Totals across our Texas stations were impressive with amounts up to 2" reported:
The system did bring a couple of reports of tornadoes but that was it as far as severe weather goes. It was a sprawling system, bringing rain to much of the Central US:
On Tuesday, this first system moves east, bringing a round of rain and storms to the Eastern US. Below is the 12 hr precipitation from 7 am ET to 7 PM on Tuesday:
For the Southeast, some of these storms could be severe with hail, damaging winds, and an isolated tornado possible:
The system will move its way across the region quickly. Below is the forecast radar from 7 am to 7 pm ET on Tuesday:
Getting into the severe threat a little closer, rain and storms will be around the Birmingham and North Alabama area Tuesday morning with the final line of strong storms moving through Tuesday Evening. The below gif is the future radar from 6 am CT Tuesday morning to 8 pm CT Tuesday evening:
On to the snowy side where widespread Winter alerts have been issued for parts of the Northern Plains and Upper Midwest:
This will be the first significant snow of the year for the region with a place like Duluth, MN already 10" below where they should be this time of year:
Duluth likely won't make up their deficit in this one system but a high probability of at least 6" falling:
The snow will start overnight tonight and spread through the region tomorrow, winding down from west to east by Wednesday afternoon. The below animation shows the timing from 6 am CT Tue AM to 12 pm CT Wed afternoon:
Lake effect snow will still crank up behind the system with significant accumulations expected in the major lake effect regions. More on timing later this week but this has major implications for anyone traveling on Thanksgiving Day. Below is the 2 day snow forecast from Wed at 7 pm ET to Fri at 7 pm ET:
Unfortunately the return trip home is looking more dicey, especially over the Central US on Saturday and into the Eastern US by Sunday. Rain, Storms, and snow, including over major transportation hubs like Chicago are all possible. The below animation tracks the system from Fri 7 am ET to Sun 7 pm ET.
